A Stronger Skin Barrier for the Change in Season

A more comfortable season

A more comfortable season

To support a stronger skin barrier as the weather turns colder, start with gentle cleansing, regular moisturizer, and daily sun protection. Keep showers warm rather than hot, notice how indoor heating affects your skin, and ease back on products that leave it uncomfortable. Small changes can make your everyday routine easier to live with.

You reach for a coat. The heating comes on. Your usual walk ends with cheeks that feel a little tighter. The season has changed, and your skin may be asking you to change with it.

As we welcome our European community through SKINS, we’re thinking about those everyday transitions: a cool morning in Amsterdam, a heated apartment, the first autumn chill closer to home in the U.S. The weather is different everywhere. Paying attention to your skin is useful wherever you are.

Why does skin feel different when the season changes?

Why does skin feel different when the season changes?

Cold, dry air and indoor heating can make it harder for skin to retain moisture. That can show up as dryness, flaking, or a tight feeling after washing. The American Academy of Dermatology’s winter skin guide explains how these conditions can affect the skin barrier.

Your barrier is the outermost protective layer of your skin. It helps keep moisture in and limits what gets through from the outside. Looking after it starts with noticing the ordinary moments when your skin feels less comfortable.

A change in texture is a cue to reassess your routine. It does not automatically mean you need a new shelf of products.

Which everyday habits help support your skin barrier?

Turn down the water temperature

A long, hot shower is tempting after a cold day. Choose warm water and keep it brief. When washing your face, use your fingertips, rinse gently, and pat dry. Skip the extra scrubbing when skin already feels tight.

Keep moisturizer within reach

Apply moisturizer soon after washing, while skin is still slightly damp. Keep hand cream by the sink and lip balm in your coat pocket. These small reminders make care easier to repeat. The AAD’s dry-skin guidance recommends moisturizing after washing and whenever skin feels dry.

Pay attention to the room

If your bedroom feels dry once the heating is on, a humidifier may help. Clean it according to its instructions. Outside, gloves and a soft scarf can make cold-weather outings more comfortable; avoid fabrics that rub or irritate your skin.

Leave room to adjust

If an exfoliant or active treatment starts to sting, pause and reassess it. Resist adding another exfoliating step to chase away every flake. For persistent sensitivity, keep products gentle and fragrance-free, and ask a dermatologist for advice. Comfort is useful feedback.

How does the IMEAN routine fit into colder days?

How does the IMEAN routine fit into colder days?

Our morning system follows a clear order: Cleanse. Mist. Ampoule. Cream. Sunscreen. Use the products your skin tolerates and follow their directions; you do not need to introduce everything at once.

Cleanse. The Enzyme Peptide Cleanser is our cleansing step. Use a light touch and avoid turning cleansing into a scrub.

Mist. Follow with Peptide Toner Mist. Keep moving through the routine rather than treating mist as a substitute for moisturizer.

Ampoule. Apply Multivitamin Peptide Ampoule before cream, following the product directions.

Cream. Restorative Peptide Cream is our moisturizing step. Its ingredient list includes glycerin, panthenol, shea butter, and dimethicone. Let the texture and how your skin feels guide your routine. The formula contains fragrance, so fragrance-sensitive skin may need another option.

Sunscreen. Finish your morning with sunscreen and follow its label for application and reapplication. Dermatologists recommend broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, alongside shade and protective clothing. Cooler weather does not remove the need for sun protection.

At night, sunscreen drops out of the sequence. Keep the rest of your routine responsive to how your skin feels.

What should you look for beyond the first application?

Choose skincare you can use consistently, with clear directions and a texture you enjoy. At IMEAN, we formulate to European Stability Standards, bringing together German ingredient science and Korean craft. These standards guide how we develop our formulas.

Stability testing considers how a product and its packaging behave over time. ISO/TR 18811:2018 provides general guidance; manufacturers determine the protocol for their products. Read more about the IMEAN Standard.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Do I need a completely new skincare routine for autumn?

Usually, start by adjusting familiar habits: gentler washing, regular moisturizer, and daily sun protection. Change products according to your skin’s comfort rather than the calendar alone.

Can oily skin feel dry in colder weather?

Yes. Oily skin can still feel dry or irritated. Choose a moisturizer you tolerate and adjust your cleansing if your skin feels tight after washing.

When should I get help for dry or irritated skin?

See a dermatologist if dryness, itching, cracking, or irritation persists despite gentle care, or if products repeatedly sting. Seasonal discomfort should not become something you simply endure.
